Curriculum for each academic subject is chosen for its goals, level of
academic excellence, presentation of content, and level of student success.
Teachers are encouraged to use the textbooks as a foundation, and to enrich
the subjects with hands-on activities and supplemental materials.
Bible
It has been said that the Bible is a window through which we see eternity.
At Mount Airy Christian Academy , our desire is to help the students look
through that window and receive eternal life in Christ. Each of our school
subjects is built on the foundation of God’s Word, but in Bible
classes that becomes our total focus. We strive through the Bible to equip
our students for their future work on earth glorifying our Heavenly Father.
Through studying the Bible, we help students realize their uniqueness
as children of God. In a world of conformity and disposable everything,
the person who knows who he is in Christ cannot be destroyed.

Language
Arts
Communication in its many forms is essential to being a well-educated
and functioning member of our society. The components of our body that
are made for communication—eyes, ears, mouth, and body—are
all gifts from God and should be used as such. The ultimate goal for each
student in language arts, beyond personal fulfillment, is the ability
to read and communicate, orally and in writing, the truths of the Bible
and through that spread the Gospel to others. We purpose to not only educate
each student in all aspects of communication so that he/she will be able
to tell others about God, but also to guard their hearts with Christian
discernment about what they read, what they say, and what they write so
that God may be glorified in all things.
The ability to read
and comprehend the written word, for pleasure as well as for information,
is of critical importance. Teaching each student to read well is a critical
part of our job as educators. Helping each student to comprehend, critically
and personally, is also vital.
Writing in its many
forms – to provide information, to express oneself, to communicate
thoughts – is also an essential skill. Our students are taken from
beginning print through cursive practice to research papers as they learn
the mechanics and the art of writing.
Speaking, in the correct
manner and with appropriate content, is an invaluable life skill. Students
can see the importance of speech by the way God speaks to His people.
It can be used for good or for evil, and as educators we must help the
student to choose to use his/her speech for God’s work. Learning
what not to say is as important as learning what to say. Through our speech
we are able to glorify God through prayer, preaching, teaching, problem
solving, and encouraging. Students need to learn that God will give them
what to say and guide the content of what they say if they will seek His
help.
Listening is a communication
skill that must be taught, just as reading, writing, and speaking are.
Students are systematically taught how to listen to the instructor, each
other, and as an audience. Students are taught not only how to listen
to other people, but also how to listen to God. Students can also serve
God by listening to others. Many people need someone to not just listen
to them, but to really hear what they are saying. Effective listening,
in a class or audience, or in an intimate conversation, can be taught
and developed.
Mathematics
Mathematic concepts are part of the truth and order that God has built
into our reality. The study of mathematics promotes structure and order
and recognizes God’s orderliness. The Bible is filled with numerical
details, measurements of the temple, ages in genealogies, length of time,
amount of wealth, census figures, and many examples where God Himself
uses numbers showing the importance of the study of measurement, time,
money, and other mathematical concepts.
Not only do we lay
the foundation for higher mathematics, but also discipline is developed
through working mathematical procedures. The logic required strengthens
the mind and the students gain confidence as they learn to compute and
work quickly.
Science
Our world is full of the wonders that God has made. Science classes are
the perfect opportunity to learn about God, the Creator of all things
and to study His creations. The students learn that nothing happened by
coincidence and that there is a specific order in the world; for each
student to understand his/her place in God’s universe is an eternal
gift with great earthly benefits. The students learn to appreciate their
bodies as God’s temple. They study the human body and its many amazing
parts. We should praise Him for His great work and glorify Him in all
things.
A unit approach
is used for the study of science. Units cover physical science, life science,
and earth science at every grade level.
History
As HIS story, History is the study of God’s interaction with man.
The students are shown in each grade God’s divine influence and
intervention throughout time. They see that God is in control of all that
happens and that God planned for history to happen. They learn to draw
conclusions about what God might be teaching them through the study of
nations and cultures and see illustrations of God’s wisdom, power,
and love through history and geography. History helps us develop a better
knowledge of God.
Geography is
the study of God’s creation. The study of the earth’s topography
and the divisions that man has made of it help the student to understand
God’s magnificent natural resources He has given to us. Companion
to the study of history and geography is the study of earthly government.
God controls everything, but human government is necessary and approved
by God to maintain order. Students learn how governments work and how
individuals can affect their government. They learn how critical godly
leaders are to a nation and that they should pray for their leaders. Students
are encouraged through this knowledge to develop responsibility and self-discipline.
Economics, even on an elementary level, teaches the students critical
concepts about the world and the history of each country.
